How Hilton Head Island Arrests and Bookings Work

The Town of Hilton Head Island does not operate its own police department. Law enforcement is provided through a contract with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. Deputies assigned to Hilton Head Island handle all patrol, response, and arrest functions within town limits. When an arrest is made, the individual is transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center at 100 Ribaut Road, Beaufort, SC 29902, for booking and processing.

During the booking process, officers record the person's personal information, take fingerprints and photographs, and log all personal belongings. The charge or charges are entered into the detention center's database. That record then becomes part of the Beaufort County Inmate Inquiry System, which is publicly accessible at no cost.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office also maintains a local presence on Hilton Head Island at 70 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head, SC 29928. This location handles some records requests and serves as a point of contact for island residents. The main Records Division is located at 2001 Duke Street, Beaufort, SC 29902, and can be reached at (843) 255-3200.

Note: All booking records for Hilton Head Island arrests are maintained by Beaufort County, not by the Town of Hilton Head Island itself, since the town does not operate its own detention or law enforcement database.

South Carolina's SLED CATCH system is the statewide criminal history search tool. It runs at catch.sled.sc.gov and costs $25 per search plus a $1 convenience fee for online access. You need the subject's last name, first initial, and date of birth to run a search. Social Security Number is optional but helps narrow results when multiple people share a name. Mail-in requests are sent to SLED Records Department, P.O. Box 21398, Columbia, SC 29221-1398, and do not carry the convenience fee.

SLED CATCH covers South Carolina arrest records and convictions. It does not include federal offenses, juvenile records, sealed records, or wanted persons information. If the system returns multiple matches, a "Special Processing Required" message appears and you must call SLED's Public Dissemination Unit at (803) 896-1443.

The VINE service at vinelink.com lets family members and victims track inmate custody status and receive automatic alerts by phone, email, or text. VINE covers the Beaufort County Detention Center, so it applies directly to Hilton Head Island arrests. Registration is free.

State-sentenced prisoners are tracked separately by the South Carolina Department of Corrections at doc.sc.gov. If someone has been convicted and transferred from the county jail to a state facility, SCDC is the right system to check.

Note: Under S.C. Code Ann. § 17-1-60, using arrest records or booking photos to demand payment in exchange for removal from a website is a criminal offense under South Carolina law.
